Whistler Brewing Company Taproom

Since its opening just prior to the 2012 Olympic Winter Games held in Whistler BC, the original WBC Taproom has become a favourite apres-ski, boarding and biking establishment for locals and visitors to this international tourist destination. Given its constant patronage, the interior, furniture and bar were due for an overhaul.

SURF Architecture worked with the WBC management team and AnDesign to create a fresh and casual environment in what was originally a chartered bus-washing bay. Lounge seating with a fireplace was added, and large sections of the 18-foot high concrete walls were clad in rough-sawn cedar planks. In addition to providing a warm, natural finish for space, the horizontal planks have greatly enhanced the acoustics for this live music venue.

Through Enterprise Capital Corporation, reclaimed wood was salvaged from the Lucky Strike Lanes, a New Westminster bowling alley that was in operation for 58 years. Clear, solid edge-grained fir from the bowling lanes was hand-selected and repurposed for all the tables, bar stools, seating benches and bar top. The central feature of the new interior is a stunning 12-foot long harvest table which has become the sought-after central seating area of local patrons.
