SURF Architecture Inc. practices the profession of architecture on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) traditional territories.

Founding Principal

Mark has contributed to a diverse range of international projects during his career as a professional Architect. Most recently, SURF Architecture has focused efforts on academic facilities, commercial & hospitality projects, and residential developments in western Canada.

A large achievement for SURF Architecture in 2018 was the successful completion of the Mulgrave School West Addition which opened for the start of the 2019 Spring Semester. The new Addition ties-in seamlessly with the original school as well as the Senior School for which Mark was the Project Architect as Associate at CEI Architecture.

Previously, Mark’s involvement in the design of Tunis Sports City in Tunisia, led to combining athletic activity, health and wellness within the framework of a vibrant, new living environment. His experience with the development of transit systems and involvement in the design of civic architectural infrastructure have included such projects as the Canada Line in Vancouver and The Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha.

Mark’s civic contributions include serving on the Advisory Design Panel for the City of White Rock in 2008, 2016 – 2018 and as Vice Chair of the ADP from 2013-2015, He was Chair of the White Rock Infrastructure Committee in 2011, a member of the White Rock Transportation Committee in 2011, a member of the White Rock Public Art Advisory Panel from 2011-2013, and a Board Member on the Semiahmoo Arts Council from 2011-2012. Involvement in design education includes sessional instruction at The Royal Oak College of Design and contributing as a design studio sessional critic at the BC Institute of Technology and at the École de l’Architecture, ULB in Brussels, Belgium. Mark also presented as a guest lecturer at The Canadian Federal Deputy Ministers’ conference in Mont Tremblant, Quebec.

Nima Ashouri

Interior Designer

Nima is a passionate and creative Interior Designer who relishes in bringing new-age, modern design to the functions of everyday living. Be it commercial or residential, he enjoys the challenge of creating something new and inspiring yet beautiful. His background in Architecture from Turkey leads him to consider the project as a whole, exploring interior environments from every aspect. He brings interiors together to complete the form, function, and beauty of projects by offering creative ways of approaching design challenges. 

Nima’s interests include adventures into the snow and mountains of Canada with his dog by his side. He also enjoys building furniture, photography and videography.

Jaime Schmid

Senior Technologist

Jaime Schmid is a seasoned Senior Technologist with a passion for architectural drafting and design. With a strong academic foundation, Jaime holds degrees from ITT Tech and BCIT in drafting and building techonology.  Her education combined with her experience have made her a trusted professional in bringing architectural visions to life.

Her professional journey spans various significant roles, reflecting her adaptability and expertise. As a landscape designer, she blended aesthetics with nature seamlessly. During her tenure as a product designer, she showcased a unique ability to harmonize creativity with functionality. With a proven track record as a freelance CAD drafter, Jaime’s proficiency with tools like AutoCAD and Revit has translated into numerous successful projects. Notably, her experience as a custom home designer illuminated her in-depth understanding of zoning bylaws, BC Building Code, and Step Code, showcasing her compliance with regulations and building science principles. Jaime’s distinctive skill lies in transforming artistic vision with practical implementation. Her enthusiasm for 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) further underscores her commitment to harness the latest and most cutting-edge tools in the field.

Beyond her professional achievements, Jaime finds fulfillment in her hobbies – fitness, hiking, camping, gardening – and cherishes time spent with her family, including her spouse, two children, and two dogs.

In summary, Jaime Schmid is an accomplished professional known for her expertise in architectural design and drafting, and her love for 3D BIM modeling. Her journey is marked by a solid educational foundation, a diverse range of roles, and a distinctive ability to translate ideas into tangible designs.

Louis Chua

Architect, AIBC

Louis is a key team member on a range of SURF Architecture projects  from complex multi-storey educational facilities to smaller tenant improvements.

He has worked on projects from Singapore to Tofino and relishes his role in bringing dreams to reality. Louis serves our clients by listening, understanding and applying that knowledge to his architectural designs. He has extensive experience detailing buildings that are rooted within the conceptual and atmospheric experience of the building.  Louis has been working in architecture for over 15 years.

 

Sharleine Isidro

Office Manager

Sharleine has over 10 years of international experience in professional office administration and document management. With her robust knowledge of architectural/engineering offices, she skillfully ensures smooth operation of procedures, protocols and archiving. Whether she is working on a large scale project or a small tenant improvement, Sharleine takes pride in representing all levels of management professionally.

Roger L. Jackson

Senior Technologist A.Sc.T.

Roger has 40 plus years experience working for several different architectural firms. A majority of which was with where for 27 years, he worked on a variety of projects. His responsibilities includes preparing architectural drawings and performing field reviews for 3, 4, and 6 storey wood frame condominium buildings. 

Roger also have has experience on 8-14 storey mid-rise steel and concrete condominium buildings and experience on 16-30 storey concrete high-rise buildings. Additionally, Roger’s knowledge base also includes commercial buildings, churches, and custom single-family residences.

Xavier Koropecky

Visualizer

Xavier assists the design team at SURF Architecture through the preparation of photo realistic and conceptual digital renderings. Currently enrolled as a high school student, he works under contract on a project by project basis. His proficiency and knowledge of applications such as Blender allow for a diverse range of rendering styles and animations. In addition, Xavier’s engagement in providing design input is valued and as a result, often incorporated into our projects.

Wesley Hope

Architectural Technologist

Wesley contributed to a number of projects as a full time employee at SURF Architecture including the Mulgrave West Addition Project, Tofino Lucky House and the Boston Construction Head Office in Surrey.

He now works with our team on a contractual basis by providing technical support, through preliminary field work, and drafting / CAD production.  

David Yan

Intern Architect, AIBC

David Yan, Intern Architect, has exceptional design and technical skills. David has worked on projects from Vancouver to Winnipeg to Beijing and relishes his role in bringing dreams to reality. His early years in architecture involved athletic facilities working on the Nirvana Fitness Centre in Beijing, China as the project architect and then again in Winnipeg as project designer for the Barbara Mitchell Resource Center in Winnipeg. David has been working in architecture for over 10 years.

At present, David’s contribution to SURF Architecture is on a contractual basis by providing design, technical and production support when required.

Roman Hak

Technical Draftsman

Roman is our skilled technical draftsman with a focus on crafting functional and cost-effective living spaces. He excels in solving architectural challenges with innovative solutions. Graduating with distinction from the Cracow University of Technology in Poland.

Roman has earned recognition in architectural competitions and has experience designing retail spaces for major corporations like TJX in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and Poland. Specializing in Revit and Archicad, both prominent BIM software, he brings precision and efficiency to his drafting work.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Roman enjoys hand drawing, learning 3D technologies, and mock-up modeling. With a passion for staying updated on industry trends and technologies, Roman is committed to delivering excellence and continues to push boundaries, redefining possibilities in the field of technical drafting.
