Tofino Lucky House

Tofino, BC
Design Architect for a new commercial and residential development located in the heart of Tofino, 2016-2018.

Tofino Lucky House

The property was converted from a derelict single house lot into a thriving mixed-use development along the commercial frontage of Campbell Street in the Gateway Area of Tofino. As a key requirement of the Development Permit, the project adds to Tofino’s much-needed inventory of staff accommodations while contributing to its unique character of buildings.

Located at the gateway into Tofino, the curved roof forms a signature architectural expression through its wave-shaped profile. The standing seam metal roofing which sweeps over the main structure is designed to allow for the future installation of south-oriented solar panels. As a pallet of horizontal plank siding, cedar shingle cladding and the accent of horizontal cedar slats, the exterior of the building contributes to the local building vernacular at the entrance into this destination surfing community.

The multi-use building also functions as a remote seismic sensoring station which is part of an early warning array installed and monitored by seismic engineers and researchers along the west coast of Vancouver Island. As a hybrid of pre-fabricated structural steel stud framing and engineered timber, robust structural efficiency is achieved without compromising the building’s thermal performance. The building envelope is also well protected with generous overhangs in this often harsh, rain and windswept environment.
