Mulgrave School Athletics and Performing Arts Centre

A proposed Athletics addition is to be located east of the existing school with connections at the Upper Main Level and Level 2. The new structure will replace the two temporary buildings which house the existing Upper Gym and a small fitness centre in order to provide enhanced programmed spaces. With direct access from the Upper Main Floor level and exterior access to and from the main sports field, the location of the new facility will serve as the core of the school’s athletics curriculum.

The facilities program includes a double competition Gymnasium, Multi-Purpose Gym, Dance and Fitness Studios and a new Choral Studio directly adjacent to the Music Department. Support spaces such as Departmental Offices, Change Rooms and Storage Rooms will also be included in the new addition.

The main massing of the East Addition comprises three parts. As the principal athletic facility, the main double gym has a clear height at centre court of 8.6 m and is constructed of steel framing and steel roof structure. A multi-purpose gym will be located to the north of the main gym on Level 2. The support facilities for the Competition Gym and Multi-Purpose Gym include the main entrance, Change Rooms, Offices, and Team Rooms located at Level 1 of the two-storey portion of the new addition. At Level 2, the Fitness Studio, Dance Studio and Viewer Lounge all overlook the Competition Gym below. The Fitness Studio will also have a panoramic view to the south, capturing the vista from downtown Vancouver to UBC.

The East Addition bookends the exterior space south of the performing arts department and creates a courtyard terrace that overlooks the sports field to the south. The stepped massing of the gym facilities is clad with insulated metal panels. The main colour of the cladding is to match the buff sand colour of the Senior School and proposed new West Addition to form a cohesive group of additions to the original red brick schoolhouse.
